VALLON visits Apopo in Siem Reap, April 2023

Worth a visit. The organization Apopo saves lives by training animals to rid the world of landmines.

Since 1995, the Belgian NGO has been working to detect landmines with rats and was accredited under the International Mine Action Standards in 2004. Since then, these special rats have supported demining programs and mine clearance organizations worldwide. For some years now, Belgian shepherd dogs have also been used as needed.

The combination with metal detectors and their animal counterparts works perfectly and enables effective mine detection in complex minefields.

But Apopo goes one step further and, as an NGO, also advocates for the sustainable use of cleared landscapes.

VALLON recommends for those who visit Siem Reap to go to Apopo and its visitor center to learn more about their important work.
