Agricultural land in Colombia reusable
The Bolivar and Sucre regions in northern Colombia were contaminated by explosive ordnance as a result of decades of armed conflict. After three years of systematic clearance, an area of several million square meters can be used for agriculture again.
Historical context
Fifty years of armed conflict between guerrillas, paramilitary groups and criminal gangs have left dangerous traces. The civilian population in particular suffered from the effects of the fighting, which was often related to the drug trade.
Systematic clearance
The clearance was carried out using two complementary approaches:
- Humanitarian mine clearance for civilian areas
- Military clearance in specific areas
The VMH3CS detector was used in both areas.
Prospects for the region
The cleared areas open up important possibilities:
- Return to agricultural use
- Safe freedom of movement for the population
- Economic development of the region
The successful clearance marks an important step towards normalizing life in the affected areas.
