The VMR3 in use in Africa
Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) pose a serious threat in the Sahel region. The VMR3 dual-sensor detector helps peace missions and humanitarian organizations detect metallic and non-metallic threats.
Challenges in the region
The G5 Sahel countries – Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad – face complex security challenges:
- Armed conflicts
- Ethnic conflicts
- Organized crime
- Terrorist threats
This situation requires reliable detection technology for various threats.
Practical use
The VMR3 is used by a variety of organizations, including:
- MINUSMA (UN peacekeeping mission)
- Humanitarian aid organizations
- Private clearance services
The detection technology makes it possible to locate:
- Conventional explosive ordnance
- IED components such as cables and wires
- Metallic and non-metallic objects
Further development
Since 2019, the G5 Sahel countries have been using the further developed dual-sensor detector VMR3G. This version optimizes the proven features of the VMR3 for:
- Simultaneous detection of different materials
- Use in extreme climate conditions
- Military and humanitarian space operations
The experience gained from these operations is continuously incorporated into the further development of the detection technology.
