Humanitarian demining saves lives and reduces suffering

In recent years, the number and complexity of humanitarian crises have significantly risen – right along with the requirements on humanitarian mine and explosive ordnance clearance. The countries with contaminated areas have applied great effort to the problem for many years, but in many places the threat has not yet been eliminated. Mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) have a life- and livelihood-threatening impact on the people living in those places.

According to information published by the Landmine & Cluster Munition Monitors (www.the-monitor.org) in 2019, a total of 59 countries contain areas contaminated with anti-personnel mines, including Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, and Cambodia. Twenty-three countries contain areas that are contaminated by cluster munition: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, Cambodia, Laos, and Lebanon, among others.

Many humanitarian aid organizations contribute to safeguarding the survival of the people there and reduce their suffering thanks to mine and explosive ordnance clearance, raising awareness of the danger, and caring for victims. Removing the sources of danger improves the living environment in those places and creates the basis for socio-economic reconstruction.

Heavy contamination and mineralised soil are only some of the many challenges. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are becoming ever more of a threat. Everyday objects such as buried plastic bottles or petrol cans equipped with remote detonators are difficult to detect and pose an incalculable threat to life.

The VALLON product range includes efficient detectors and systems for humanitarian demining.

Thanks to diverse detection options and state-of-the-art technology, they can be used in a wide variety of applications. Their robustness makes VALLON detectors perfectly suitable for use under extreme working conditions.

The VMH4 metal detector (successor to the VMH3CS) features replaceable detector coils and optimized ergonomics for permanent daily use. Due to its flexible optimization for a variety of applications, it is the ideal metal detector for humanitarian demining and explosive ordnance clearance.

Our VMX10 large loop metal detector is regularly used to locate ERW.
